Coconut Water
Coconut water is the nutritious, sweet juice that comes from young coconuts. When coconuts mature, they start producing coconut milk instead of water. A pleasantly refreshing drink, coconut water is rich in electrolytes, which helps replenish and rehydrate the body after exercising. Pure coconut water is much lower in calories and sugar than most sports drinks, serving as a healthy post-workout beverage. Electrolytes, a class of minerals that include potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus, not only keep us hydrated but also help regulate blood acidity and muscle function. Coconut water is especially rich in potassium, a mineral that regulates heartbeat, muscle function, and blood pressure by counteracting the stimulating effects of sodium. Sodium maintains water balance in the body, which helps prevent stroke and heart attack. Because coconut water is richer in potassium than sodium, and more sodium is lost in sweat compared to potassium, coconut water is better suited for lower-intensity workouts. Aside from minerals, coconut water contains amino acids (protein), vitamins, dietary fiber, enzymes, and trace elements including manganese, zinc, selenium, iodine, and sulfur. If all that wasnʼt enough to convince you of itʼs awesomeness, coconut water also has cytokinins, a class of phytohormones with anti-cancer affects.Next time youʼre thirsty for a natural, healthy energy drink, try pure and delicious coconut water!Danielle Levy, Registered Nutrition Practitioner
